FCCLA students head to national competition
RANDOLPH – Three high school students and their sponsor will soon be sleepless in Seattle as they attend the national Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) national leadership conference June 29-July 3.

Class of 1974
The Laurel-Concord Class of 1974 gathered recently at the home of classmate Marilyn (Eckert) Abts to celebrate their 50th year reunion. A total of 29 classmates spent the afternoon reminiscing and getting caught up on each other’s lives. A poster board was made remembering the nine classmates who are no longer with us. They are Anita Hanson, Mike Madsen, Randy Leapley, Sheryl Anderson, Marina Lenzen, Shirlene (Kardell) Boeckenhauer, Kirk McCoy, John Suber and Russell Anderson. Those on the committee who help with the 50th reunion were Kim (Chace) Dunklau, Marilyn (Eckert) Abts, Janis (Wallin) Pfingsten, Jeanne (Pippitt) Kardell, Connie (Nielsen) Kathol. Everyone invited to enter Open Class exhibits at Cedar County Fair
HARTINGTON – All Cedar County residents are invited and encouraged to enter open class exhibits for the Cedar County Fair, July 18. Exhibit categories includes Horticulture, Fruits and Vegetables, Flowers, Domestic Science, Quilts, Photography, Needlework and Arts and Crafts for all ages.

Gov. Pillen eyes Nebraska taking over K-12 school funding

Southeastern South Dakota homes, roads are ravaged by flood waters

Cedar County 4-H youth participate in Protect the Plate
HARTINGTON – Over 200 local students took part in the 2024 4-H Ag Innovators Experience - Protect the Plate Challenge through this past spring/ summer. This STEM-based activity challenges them to use their critical thinking skills to take part in solving real-world agriculture issues around food safety.

Hole In One
Last week Brooks Heine, 11, became one of the youngest golfers to ever record a hole-in-one at the Hartington golf course. He recorded the ace on the third hole on June 18 using a three wood. Miller Heine, and Trey Leise witnessed the shot. This marks the second hole-in-one of the season at the local golf course. Riley Sudbeck earned an ace earlier this year. Sudbeck also earned his ace on the third hole when he nailed the shot on May 12. Brooks is the son of Scott and Jennifer Heine.

Hartington Seniors can’t overcome early deficit
HARTINGTON – The Hartington Post 4 American Legion Senior baseball team found itself down 8-0 after the first two innings and spent the rest of the night climbing back into the game before eventually falling, 9-7 to Battle Creek in Ralph Bishop League action here at Felber Park June 19.

Area students named to Wayne State College Deans’ list
WAYNE – Wayne State College included 1,154 students on the dean’s list for exemplary academic achievement during the Spring 2024 semester. Students listed on the dean’s list are full-time undergraduate students who have achieved a GPA of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale for the semester. An asterisk (*) denotes a 4.0 GPA for the term.
