HARTINGTON — The Hartington-Newcastle Wildcats put their first one in the win column with a dominant 71-47 win over Wakefield during Lewis and Clark Conference basketball action Tuesday.

The Wildcats hit the ground running, building an 11-0 lead to start the game.

HNS scored on a Matthew Meisenheimer inside shot and free throw to make it 3-0. The Cats then duplicated that feat, but this time Sam Harms hit the inside jumper and free throw to make it 6-0. Harms hit a shot from downtown to make it 9-0. Meisenheimer then snagged a rebound and made a put-back to extend the lead to 11-0.

Wakefield finally got on the board midway through the first frame when Blake Brown hit a 3-pointer from the left corner.

Shaye Morten extended the HNS lead to 15-3 with a 10-foot jumper. Wakefield got its offense clicking over the final two-and-a-half minutes, putting together a 10-4 run to close out the first frame trailing 19-13.

The Trojans responded with a 17-16 second-quarter run to cut the ‘Cats halftime lead to five points — 35-30.

The Wildcats were in the second frame by Teagan Scoggan, who came off the bench to drop in seven points. Sam Harms hit for five in the second frame, while Meisenheimer hit two from the paint.

The second half belonged to the Purple and White.
