Wayne stops Cedar; Trojans bounce GACC

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — The Wayne Blue Devils silenced the Cedar Catholic crowd early Friday, rolling out to a 17-11 first-quarter lead en route to an 11-point Mid-States Conferene win over the Trojans.

Cedar got its groove back in the second frame to outscore Wayne, 14-10, and cut the Blue Devil lead to just two points — 27-25.

Cedar again earned the scoring advantage to start the second half, putting together a 12-11 third-quarter run.

Wayne once again grabbed the momentum in the final frame, outscoring the Trojans to seal the win.

Turnovers hurt the Trojans in the contest. Cedar coughed the ball up 15 times in the game, while Wayne only turned it over four times.

The Trojans were led on the night by Tate Thoene’s 16-point effort. He also led the team on the boards with eight rebounds.

Cedar looked like a whole different team when they hit the floor Saturday night to take on the West Point Guardian Angels.

The game started off slowly, with the Trojans edging out a 10-8 first-quarter lead.

Cedar turned on the jets in the second frame to outscore their guests, 22-11, and take a 32-19 lead into the halftime break.

Cedar kept pouring it on in the second half, too, outscoring the Blue Jays 19-9 in the third quarter, and 19-15 in the final frame.

Cedar was hot from long distance in this one, connecting on 50 percent of their 3-point attempts. The Trojans shot the ball well closer in, as well, hitting 29-37 field goals.

Charlie Schroeder led the team in scoring with 21 points. He collected yet another double-double on the year, as he also cleaned the glass for 12 rebounds.

Myles Thoene hit for 16 points and dished out three assists to aid the Cedar offense.
