Late rally gives LCC win over ‘Cats

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — The Wildcats put a huge scare into one of the state’s top-ranked teams before falling to a late rally in Lewis and Clark Conference action here Tuesday.

LCC started the contest by building an 18-12 first-quarter advantage. Hartington-Newcastle came back in the second frame to outscore the Bears, 15-11, and cut their halftime deficit to just two points — 29-27.

A Jake Peitz jumper to open the second half put the Cats in a 29-29 tie with the Bears.

A pair of Cael Hartung free throws then gave the Bears a two-point advantage, but the Cats’ Mathew Meisenheimer matched him with two charity tosses of his own to again knot the score up. Sam Harms and Meishenheimer hit freethrows and nailed a jumper to knot the score at 33-33.

Shay Morten then dished the ball off to Meisenheimer for an easy two points. One more Wildcat jumper then gave the home team a 37-33 lead at the buzzer.

That lead didn’t last long, though. Ty Erwin’s 3-pointer pulled the Bears to within one point, 37-36.

A Sam Harms turn-around jumper and a Morten freethrow again put the Cats in the lead. The Cats held a four-point advantage until the midpoint of the final frame when the Bears finally came out of hibernation to outscore Hartington-Newcastle en route to the seven-point win.

Sam Harms ended up leading the HNS offense with 21 points.
