RANDOLPH — Mass of Christian Burial for Walter “Wally” Gubbels Jr., 91, Randolph, was Nov. 4, at the St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph. Father Kevin Vogel and Deacon Doug Tunink officiated. The service was also live-streamed on the Stonacek Funeral Chapel Facebook page.

Interment was at the St. Frances Catholic Cemetery, rural Randolph.

Pallbearers were his grandsons, Jason Gubbels, Adam Gubbels, Zach Steiner, Jake Steiner, Mark Steiner, Austin Gubbels, Ajay Gubbels and Aiden Gubbels.

Honorary pall bearers were his granddaughters, Samantha Leimser, Ashley Boyer, Tara Valenzuela, Amanda Gubbels and Skyler Gubbels.

Military rites were provided by the V.F.W. Alvin Kessler Post #5545, American Legion Post #113, and United States Air Force Honors Guard.

Visitation and a vigil service were Friday, also at the St. Frances Catholic Church.

Stonacek Funeral Chapel, Randolph, was in charge of the arrangements.

Wally died at his residence, with his family by his side, Oct. 30, 2023.

Wally was born Nov. 11, 1931, to Walter and Irene (Gerber) Gubbels Sr., at his folks’ family farm, rural Sholes. He attended grade school at Sholes and graduated from St. Frances Catholic High School, Randolph, in 1949. He joined the Air Force in 1951 and served as an inflight refueling boom operator out of Biggs Air Force base in El Paso, Texas, until 1955. He returned home to farm and married Detta Rameil S ept. 11, 1956, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Bow Valley. Wally and Detta farmed east of Randolph and moved into Randolph in 19 95. Wally retired in 2008.

After he retired, Wally enjoyed gardening and traveling. He was a member of the St. Frances Catholic Church, Randolph, the Parish Council, Knights of Columbus, American Legion and Randolph Farm Supply.

Survivors include his wife, Detta Gubbels, Randolph; children, Jeff (Suz) Gubbels, Randolph; Barb Gubbels, Norfolk; Chris (Kent) Steiner, Norfolk; Tony (Denise) Gubbels, Randolph; Gary (Jeri) Gubbels, Randolph; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; siblings, Gilbert (Mimi) Gubbels, Cedar Falls, Iowa; sister, Donna (Jim) Lackas, Randolph; and sister-in-law, Rita Gubbels, Randolph.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Sr. and Irene; two brothers, Richard Gubbels and Ronald Gubbels; sister, Frances Lenhoff; and brother-in-law, Charles Lenhoff.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to Hospice Care, Wayne.
