Sudbeck is part of WSC Honors presentation event

Posted in:

WAYNE — Hartington native Morgan Sudbeck was one of seven Wayne State College honors students to present their honors projects during the fall 2019 honors research and creativity forum, Dec. 6.

Her presentation was titled, “Communicating a Serious Illness.”

The purpose of this study was to examine and understand the communication challenges, emotions, and experiences of a mother whose child was born with a serious illness.

One in-depth interview with a mother whose child had a serious illness was analyzed.

This qualitative narrative inquiry highlights themes of communicating with doctors, lifestyle changes, hope and guilt, and overcoming the loss of a child.

Sharing such a story will allow mothers to identify and relate all while learning through this narrative. Mothers, however, are not the only ones that will benefit from this research.

Family members, friends, and medical professional can all expand their knowledge and understanding when it comes to a mother with a child who has a serious illness from the individual narrative.

The project was under the guidance of Dr. Randa Garden.

Sudbeck is the daughter of Sue Sudbeck and Russ Sudbeck of Hartington. She is a communication studies major, obtaining a minor in international studies, and will graduate in May 2020.

While at Wayne State College, Sudbeck has been on the Dean’s List, and presented at the Central States Communication Association Undergraduate Honors Research Conference in 2018.
