ST. JAMES — This year’s harvest was one for the record books. Harvest is completed around Cedar and Knox counties and most farmers and local elevators agree it was the best they’ve seen.

“It’s the best I’ve experienced,” said St. James area farmer, Richard Pinkelman. “It’s hard to figure out why,” he said “We didn’t have all that much rain. But we didn’t have a lot of hot weather either.”

Pinkelman, who farms in northern Cedar County, said he was amazed at the yields, and quality of corn coming out of the fields this fall.

“There were big kernels” and test weight was good,” he said.

HARTINGTON — Hartington School Board members Monday discussed adding an extra meal for the students at the school.

The suggestion of looking into offering breakfast has come out of Wellness Committee meetings, Anderson said.

“It could bring in some money for the lunch program,” Anderson said. “Crofton serves an average of about 80 breakfasts a day. The little kids eat and the athletes like to eat the breakfast after an early morning practice.”
