Cedar duo competes at State

Posted in:

Hoesing earned a reversal midway through the final period to go up 6-4. He also earned a penalty point to make the final 7-4.

The Cedar Catholic senior battled Ord’s Kelen Meyer in his next match. Meyer, 40-8 on the year, started the contest off with a first-period takedown. He then earned a second-period reversal to go up 4-0. The two wrestlers traded reversals in the third period to make it 6-2 in favor of Meyer, before Meyer was able to flip Hoesing for the pin.

Despite the setback at State, Hoesing should be proud of his senior season efforts, Coach Justin Bartling said.

“Eric had a great season and accomplished so much in his career. His presence in the wrestling room will be missed,” he said.

Hochstein went 0-2 at 152 pounds.

“Conner wrestled his tail off but unfortunately went 0-2,” coach Bartling said. “Conner had a great turnaround season. Last year he had three wins and this year won 24 and made it to state for the first time. We will continue to get more work in this offseason and I have no doubt he can make it back there next year.”

Hochstein took on Ethan Mullaly of North Bend Central in his first State Tourney match on Thursday.

Mullaly earned the takedown, then quickly worked Hochstein into a pin at the 1:20 mark to send the Cedar sophomore into the consolation rounds.

Hochstein faced Arcadia-Loup City’s Tryon Calleroz in his next match.

The Loup city wrestler earned the takedown after the pair battled for control for the first 1:15 in the match. Those were the only points scored in the first period, though as the two wrestlers battled evenly the rest of the way.

Calleroz earned a reversal in the second period to go up 4-0. Midway through the second period Calleroz caught Hochstein in a move and put him on his back for the pin.

Hochstein finished his season at 24-19

Bartling said the future looks bright for the local team.

“As a team we continue to get better and better. Each wrestler improved throughout the year and for the third year in a row we had multiple competitors in Omaha. We will miss our seniors, but we will have a great group of young men to continue to lead this program forward.”
