Bears stumble against the Wildcat attack

Posted in:

LAUREL — Laurel-Concord-Coleridge dropped its fourth game of the football season Oct. 6 when Hartington-Newcastle came to town with a 2-4 record.

From the outside looking in, this seemed to be quick work for the Bears, but a closer look makes one realize this was not going to be easy.

It wasn’t, and the Wildcats moved up to 3-4 on the season with their third straight win after four losses by a final score of 40-20.

Hartington-Newcastle sprinted to a 34-8 lead at the half, with the lone Laurel-Concord-Coleridge touchdown coming on a Dylan Taylor 25-yard sprint to the end zone.

After the deficit in the opening half, the Bears started to nibble away at the lead and scored the only points in the third quarter on a Connor Korth 1-yard plunge to get to within 34-14.

The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge defense stopped the Bears in the red zone twice as it tried to get back in the game.

Taylor found Carter Kvols from 19 yards away to get back to within two scores, but the Wildcats salted the game away with a touchdown late in the final frame to end the contest.

Taylor threw for an even 100 yards and rushed for another 61 on six carries. Eli Haisch was the leading rusher with 69 yards on 15 totes. Kvols caught five passes for 47 yards and the touchdown.

Despite the loss, the LCC playoff chances are still alive and likely would make the post season with a win over Tri County Northeast on the road.

Bradyn Urwiler and Korth paced the defense with a dozen tackles each.

The Wolfpack will bring a 4-3 record into the game.
