1978: Wink’s Appliance opens its doors

LAUREL — Last Friday night, the Laurel-Concord football team decided Pierce put their pants on one leg at a time just like anyone else. They went on to whip their rival 20-6. This is the first time Laurel has met Pierce since 1954.

LAUREL — Gregg Anderson and Julie Paulson were crowned Homecoming king and queen this year at Laurel-Concord. Julie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charley Paulson and Gregg is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Anderson.

LAUREL — Mrs. Fred Burns will leave today for Omaha to meet her sister-in-law, Mrs. V. W. Stadds, of Santa Ana, Calif. They will join the Floyd Root tour there and travel through the New England states and Canada for 16 days.

LAUREL — Mrs. Marlen Johnson represented the Concordia Lutheran Church Women at the Northeast District LCW Day of Renewal at Tabor Lutheran Church in Wausa Sept. 18. The retreat theme was “Growing In Faith.” Twentynine ladies attended the event from Pierce, Pender, Emerson, Bloomfield, Wayne, Wausa, Concord, Dakota City.

LAUREL — Janel Campbell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Campbell, Laurel, has enrolled in the hotel, motel, and restaurant management program at Central Technical Community College in Hastings.

LAUREL — The Concordia Lutheran Church Men met Sept.

20 at the church. Glenn Magnuson and Randall Carlson presented a program called, “God’s Creation.”

LAUREL — The semi-annual election of new officers for the Good Morning Toastmasters was held at the Sept. 26 meeting.

The newly elected are Mary Ann Christensen for president; Ralph Glock for educational vice president; John Moyer for administrative vice president; Anita Glade for secretary-treasurer; Lyla Swanson, for sergeant of arms.

LAUREL — The Dixon Community Improvement Committee received a check for $1,410 from Branch 1566 of the Aid Association for Lutherans. This total matches the amount raised by DCIC at the Dixon Fun Day Aug. 7.

LAUREL — Scholarship hall awards will go to nearly 400 University of Kansas students for the 1983-84 academic year including Colleen Mackey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Mackey, Laurel.

LAUREL — The Laurel-Concord Lady Bears volleyball team played three tough sets but came up short on Sept. 22 as they lost to Emerson-Hubbard 14-16, 15-13 and 11-15.

LAUREL — The Contemporary Extension Club met Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the home of Paula Haisch. Nine members were present. Officers were elected at the meeting. They are as follows: Judy Pehrson, president; Paula Haisch, vice president; Sharon Long, secretary-treasurer; and Mary Ann Ward, craft leader.

LAUREL — Both Laurel-Concord junior high football teams started their seasons with wins over Ponca Sept. 19. The eighth grade team beat the Indians 9-0. The seventh grade team shut them out 6-0.

LAUREL — In their first game of the season Sept. 20, the Laurel-Concord Bears’ junior high volleyball team beat Winside in two straight sets, 15-1 and 15-13.

LAUREL — The Laurel-Concord Bears’ football team earned their first victory of the season Friday night when they beat Osmond 20-6. The Bears racked up 204 rushing and 65 passing yards.
