1974: New pet food processing plant to hold open house

COLERIDGE — Winter continued full speed ahead last week. Tuesday afternoon’s predicted snow storm did not hit full force but light snow and high winds blocked some roads and the temp dropped to nearly 20 below zero.

LAUREL-Armin Urwiler and Donald Zeurcher, both of Laurel, left Monday morning for Omaha, where they will be inducted into the Armed Forces.

LAUREL-Harold Twiford of Laurel had been elected to membership in the American Aberdeen-Angus Breeders’ Association at Chicago, Secretary Frank Richards announced this week. Mr. Twiford was one of seven purebred Angus breeders elected from Nebraska during the past month to membership in the organization.

Jan. 7, 1954

LAUREL-Pvt. Eugene Samuelson left Jan. 1 for New Jersey for assignment somewhere in Europe.

He completed a 23-day leave at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Samuelson of Laurel. He recently completed basic training at Fort Riley, KS.

LAUREL-The annual congregational meeting of the Presbyterian Church was held Sunday afternoon. Officers elected were: Elders-Morton Fredricksen, Ralph Morten and John Urwiler. They will serve a three-year term. Trustees-Alfred Mittelstadt, F.P. Stewart and E.J. Thomas. Church School Officers; Superintendent, Mrs. Roscoe Dempster; Assistant superintendent, Mrs. Morton Fredricksen; secretary, Mrs. Roy Thomas and assistant secretary, Gana Fae Stewart.

COLERIDGE — A polio benefit basketball game is scheduled for on Friday between the Coleridge Bulldogs and Coleridge alumni.

LAUREL — Preparing food for U.S. soldiers in Korea is Cpl. Clifford Bethune of Laurel, first cook in the 24th Infantry Division’s military police company. The 22-year-old soldier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Bethune, Laurel, entered the army in June 1952, completed basic training at Camp Roberts, CA and arrived overseas last January.

LAUREL — A change in the management of the Laurel Council Oak store took place this weekend when Carl Suhr was transferred to the Council Oak store at Plainview. Mr. Suhr, who had been here for the past few months moved this past weekend and Don Guigen is his replacement until a permanent man will be assigned in about two weeks.

LAUREL — A Christmas program was held Dec.

23 at the Happy Corner School District No. 86, by Mrs. Rodney Hansen and pupils. Between the plays and poems, Miss Lorraine Mattes played her accordion. After the program, Santa Claus came and gave each child candy. The presents were given out and lunch was served by the board members’ wives.

LAUREL — Explorers Post 176 met in the R.B.

Michels home. The meeting was called to order by vice president Cam Sutton with the reciting of the Explorers Code. They practiced the Morse code.

LAUREL —Those winning prizes in the magazine drive were Gregg Guinn, Marsha Gilliland, Joan Schutte, Vicky Smith, Judy Fahnestock, Kathy Schutte, Jean Boeshart, Don Hart, Dianne Magnuson Marsha Olsen, Dave Felber, Mary Kavanaugh and Debbie Anderson.

A total of $294.56 went to the new football scoreboard from the selling of magazines. The following students have enrolled in Laurel School recently: Sharene Coleman, kindergarten, Steven Coleman, second; Phyllis Rice, 11th grade; Dale Rice, seventh grade and Dean Hattig, 10th grade. Dave Manz was the winner of the Regent’s exam and Betty Sutherland was alternate. A new bell system has been installed in the school by R.B. Michels.

LAUREL— At the regular meeting of the Laurel School Board Jan 16, Superintendent James Withee was re-elected and given a three-year contract.

COLERIDGE — A coyote hunt is being planned for an area west of Coleridge on Feb. 2. Proceeds will got to the local fire departments.

COLERIDGE — Judith Hall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lisle Hall, placed second in the annual Voice of Democracy contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

COLERIDGE — Arnie’s Tavern and Larry’s Bar, both in Coleridge, were broken into Thursday. No word on whether the crimes are related.

COLERIDGE — The Coleridge boys basketball team battled Cedar Catholic in a close game in front of a packed house. The Bulldogs ended up squeaking by the Trojans 56-51.

COLERIDGE — Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Flaugh recently donated a rug weaving machine to the Park View Haven Nursing Home.

LAUREL-Northeast Nebraska Recyclers, the pet food processing plant located 2 1/4 miles west of Laurel on Highway 20, is planning an open house Jan 12th. George Blakeman, general manager, extends says a guided tour of the plant will be made during the afternoon. The newly completed facility, which will employ seven persons plus drivers, is expected to start operation next week.
