Wynot stops potent Wausa offense

Posted in:

WAUSA — The Wynot Blue Devils spoiled Wausa’s Homecoming Friday with a 34-22 downing of the Vikings. Wynot built a sizeable halftime lead only to see the Vikings rally late to make a competitive game of it.

Wynot spread the wealth on offense as they got a pair of touchdown runs by Zack Foxhoven, and one by Dylan Heine. Carson Wieseler and Charlie Schroeder caught TD passes.

The Vikings got a big game from Jaxson Claussen who rushed for 173 yards and fired a pair of long touchdown passes to Cashe Carson to lead their offense

On defense Wynot was led by Tate Guenther with 15 tackles and Zack Foxhoven, Colin Wieseler and Charlie Schroeder with 14 tackles each.

Wausa’s defense was paced by Josh Wattier with 12 tackles and Tug Dawson and Jaxon Claussen with nine tackles each. Wynot got off to another fast start in this game as an early fumble by the Vikings was recovered by Colin Wieseler on their first offensive set.

Two plays later Dylan Heine hooked up with Colin Wieseler for 12 yards and Heine would cap the drive on a two-yard dive for the touchdown. Heine hit Wieseler for the two-point conversion as the Blue Devils had the 8-0 early advantage.

Wausa moved the ball deep into Blue Devil territory on their next offensive possession, helped by a 35-yard catch and run by Cashe Carlson. The drive would stall and Wynot took over at the 10 yard-line.

The Blue Devils put together a long march. Catches of 14 yards by Jack Kuchta and 12 yards by Charlie Schroeder gave Wynot a couple of first downs. Zack Foxhoven cashed in on the drive on a three-yard touchdown run over the left side of the line for Wynot’s second score of the night. The PAT kick was blocked as the first quarter ended with the Blue Devils leading 14-0.

Wausa was again able to move the ball on offense but their drive stalled out in the redzone at the 10 yard-line. Wynot gained an initial first down and then Dylan Heine connected with Carson Wieseler on a deep crossing pattern for a 57-yard scoring bomb. Wynot faked the PAT kick and Colin Wieseler hit Jack Kuchta all alone in the endzone to give the Blue Devils a 22-0 lead.

Wausa’s offense would find success just before the half. With Jaxson Claussen carrying the load with runs of 20, 13 yard and capping the drive with a threeyard scramble up the middle for the touchdown. Claussen added the two-point conversion run as well to make the halftime score 22-8 in favor of Wynot.

Wynot received the second half kickoff and marched quickly down the field.

A 32-yard catch and run by Carson Wieseler set them up deep in Wausa territory. Jarrett Andersen helped the Viking defense stop the drive with a fourth down sack of the Blue Devils quarterback at the nine yard-line.

Wynot got one more scoring opportunity off a turnover when Colin Wieseler got his second fumble recovery at the 34 yardline. Aided by a first down run by Foxhoven and a 10-yard catch by Carson Wieseler the Blue Devils moved into Viking territory.

Two plays later Dylan Heine found his tight end Charlie Schroeder in a seam down right side for a 28-yard touchdown toss. Once again the PAT kick was blocked, but Wynot had built a 28-8 lead.

The Vikings would give the Blue Devils a short field to work with when they went for it on 4th down at their own 26 yard line but were stopped.

Zack Foxhoven took just two plays to reach pay dirt. A 20 yard run set up an eight-yard touchdown run around the left side for another Wynot score. A bad snap cancelled the PAT kick attempt as Wynot’s lead grew to 34-8.

Wausa’s offense rallied late. Jaxson Claussen scrambled for a pair of first down runs and then connected with Cashe Carlson on a 34-yard touchdown for the Vikings’ second score of night. Josh Wattier scooted in for the conversion making the score 34-16.

Wausa executed a successful onside kick to get the ball right back at their own 40 yard-line. First down runs by Josh Wattier and Jaxso Claussen set up another score for the Vikes. Cashe Carlson would again get behind the Blue Devils secondary and Claussen hit him wit a 21 yard touchdown toss. The PAT run was stuffed making the score 34-22 with four minutes left in the game. A 35-yard Zack Foxhoven run got the Blue Devils out of trouble on

A 35-yard Zack Foxhoven run got the Blue Devils out of trouble on their next offensive possession. Their drive stalled out but the Blue Devils defense was up to the task as they held resulting in the 34-22 final score.
