Wynot pulls away for big win over Creighton

WYNOT — The Wynot Blue Devils hosted the Creighton Bulldogs for homecoming Friday night.

In a game that was actually closer than the final score indicated, the Bulldogs hung tough for three quarters until the Blue Devils were able to pull away in the final frame to earn the 45-16 win.

Wynot improved their season record to 4-1 while Creighton’s fell to 2-3.

Wynot’s offense was led by Dylan Heine who threw for 236 yards including touchdown passes to Chase Schroeder, Colin Wieseler and Kason Koch.

Carson Wieseler had 10 catches for 140 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Heine also had a rushing touchdown in the game.

“ We did not play our best consistently but the boys found a way to win the game,” said Wynot’s head coach Steve Heimes.

Creighton had touchdown catches by Gage Walton and Ty Diedricksen to lead their offensive unit.

On defense for Wynot was led by Colin Wieseler with 17 tackles and Zack Foxhoven and Carson Wieseler with 9 tackles each. Chase Schroeder was a factor with 7 stops and 4 sacks on the night.

Creighton’s defense was paced by Jordon Condon with 8 tackles and Ty Diedrichson and Caleb Smith with 7 stops each. Gage Walton had a interception and Matthew Johnson had a sack and a tackle for a safety for the Bulldogs.

Wynot put together an early scoring drive. Helped by a fumble recovery by James Collins, Dylan Heine would find his tight end Chase Schroeder up the left seem for a 20 yard scoring toss. The PATwas no good the Blue Devils took an early 6-0 lead.

Creighton defense would pin the Devils deep and sack for a safety of the Wynot quarterback in the in zone made the score 6-2 at the end of first quarter.

The two defensive units controlled the tempo for most of the second quarter. Late in the period the Blue Devils were able to put together a scoring drive. Fueled by a nice punt return to the 25 yard line by Joesph Sudbeck Wynot found themselves pushing the ball into the Bulldogs red zone. The Blue Devils would cap this pass drive on a quick out to Carson Wieseler from 4 yards away for the score. The PAT pass was intercepted as the half came to a end with Wynot leading 12-2.

Defenses dominated for most of the third quarter. In the final minutes Creighton would score on a 35 yard touchdown pass from Taylor Nilson to Gage Walton. The PAT pass was off the mark but the Bulldogs had cut Wynot lead to 12-8.

As the clock wound down for the third quarter Wynot mounted a drive as they moved the ball quickly down field. Aided by first down catches by Carson Wieseler and Joseph Sudbeck the Blue Devils moved into the Bulldogs red zone. With just .30 second left Heine would find his favorite target Carson Wieseler in the right flat. Wieseler would avoid a couple of would be tacklers for the 13 yard touchdown. After a holding penalty on the PAT attempt Dylan Heine would scramble in from the 13 yard line for the extra point to make the score 20-8 going into the final quarter of play.

Creighton would continue to rally early in the final quarter. The Bulldog would grind out a 10 play 65 yard drive to paydirt. Capping the drive with a 4 yard blast up the middle by Gage Walton as they cut Wynot lead to one score at 20-16.

From that point on it was all Blue Devils however as they would put up 25 unanswered point. The first was a quick strike on a 48 yard scoring bomb from Heine to Carson Wieseler. The PAT failed to make the tally 26-16.

Creighton would fumble the kickoff return and Wynot took over on their own 21 yard line. Three plays later Dylan Heine would hook up with Colin Wieseler on a 13 yard catch and run. Still struggling with PAT’s the kick was no good but the Blue Devils improved their lead to 32-16.

The Creighton offense was able to move the ball down into scoring range on their next possession Carson Wieseler would step in front of a quick out pass by the Bulldogs and gallop 70 yards the other way for Wynot as the Blue Devils were pulling away leading 38-16.

Colin Wieseler set up Wynot’s final score with his interception return to the 30 yard line with 2:00 to go in the game. Heine connected with Kason Koch for a 29 yard scoring jaunt. Chase Schroeder kicked the PAT to make it 45–16.
