Wynot boys surprise Pender in SubDistrict

WISNER — The Wynot Blue Devils battled the Pender Pendragons in their first round game of SubDistrict play at the Wisner-Pilger gym Tuesday night.

Wynot would build a fivepoint halftime lead and expand it to 11 points early in the third quarter, only to see Pender rally in the final quarter to make it a tight game. Wynot survived and advanced to play Randolph on Thursday with the 41-38 win.

Wynot got a solid game from their big man Garrett Lange who finished with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Owen Sudbeck and Tristan Heimes contributed to the win with nine and eight points re spectively.

Pender’s Caleb Trimble took scoring honors for the game with 22 points and Dylan Vogt and Larry McManigal each grabbed six rebounds for the Pendragons.

The two teams would trade buckets in the opening quarter. Pender got a pair of treys by Calvin Trimble and a basket each from Dylan Vogt and Spencer Robbess. Wynot countered with five points by Owen Sudbeck and four points in the paint by Garrett Lange as they earned an 11-10 early lead.

The Blue Devils defense tighten their grip in the second quarter as Pender was held to just five points, all coming from Caleb Trimble. Wynot got a pair of buckets from the low block area by Garrett Lange and another basket by Owen Sudbeck, earning a 20-15 halftime advantage.

Both teams opened it up a little in the third quarter. Garrett Lange went to work on the offensive glass and connected for eight key points and Trystan Heimes made a couple of nice moves inside for four points, as Wynot increased their lead. Pender made a late run, thanks to five points from Jason Maise and a trey by Caleb Trimble, to cut the Blue Devils’ lead back to six points at 34-27 going into the final period of play.

Pender would rally at the five-minute mark of the fourth quarter behind Caleb Trimble’s eight points, hitting 5-8 as a team from the freethrow line.

Wynot got a big 3-pointer by Anthony Haberman and two points each from Trystan Heimes and Garrett Lange as they hung on for the 41-38 win.
