Wynot boys put scare into undefeated Ponca

WYNOT — The Ponca Indians came to Wynot on Thursday and brought with them hopes of keeping their perfect win streak alive. The Indians were able to accomplish that goal but it would take double overtime to do it.

As they earned the hard fought 64-55 win. Wynot would trail for most of the game but a furious fourth quarter comeback by the Blue Devils tied the game to send it into the first overtime and a last second putback by Ponca would send the game into the second overtime period. Ponca’s season record moved to 14-0 with the win while Wynot’s fell to 10-4 with the loss.

The Blue Devils defense had trouble containing the Indians leading scorer Dalton Lamprecht who went off for 27 points 11 of them coming in the overtime periods. Tucker McGill and Trystan Benelhymer also hit double figures with 14 and 12 points respectively.

Wynot’s Zack Foxhoven had a big second half to finish with 20 points and Dylan Heine also was in double figures with his 13-point effort.

In the opening quarter the two teams traded baskets. Wynot got a basket each from Chase Schroeder, Zack Foxhoven, Carson Wieseler and Andrew Haberman. Ponca got three pointers from Dalton Lamprecht and Jay Benelhymer as the Indian clung to a 10-8 lead.

In the second quarter Ponca got 5 points from Tucker McGill and a trey each form Dalton Lamprecht and Trystan Bemelhymer as the Indians went on a 14-9 run to increase their lead to 24-17 at halftime.

Five points by Kotner Koch and a bucket by Andrew Haberman helped the Blue Devils stay in striking distance.

The third quarter was an even affair. Wynot got three pointers from Zack Foxhoven and Killian Steinhaus and a couple of put backs on the offensive glass from Chase Schroeder and Dylan Heine. Ponca countered with treys from Ben Bodlak and Trystan Benelhymer and a couple of baskets from Dalton Lamprecht as the Indian took a 35-28 lead into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter the Blue Devils would mount a rally, lead by 11 points from Zack Foxhoven and seven points from Dylan Heine as the home team went on an 18-11 run. Ponca got four points from Lamprecht and a trey by Tucker McGill. With Wynot up by two, Ponca would miss a shot, but Austin Dendinger would get the rebound and hit the tying shot with no time left on the clock to send the game into overtime with a 46-46 tied game.

In the first overtime each team would score five points and with the score tied at 51-51 it went to a second overtime period. Dylan Heine and Zack Foxhoven would hit treys for Wynot in the second extra period but Dalton Lamprecht hit a pair of baskets and the Indian went 8 of 10 from the line to escape with the 64-55 win.
