HARTINGTON — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils took on the Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans on Friday night in what turned out to be a defensive battle.

No junior varsity games were held due to complications because of the Wynot School fire.

Wynot would get off to an early lead and their defense made it stand up for the rest of the game to earn the 38-29 win.

Cold free throw shooting by the Lady Trojans was also a factor in this one.

Cedar ended up 4 for 12 from the charity stripe, while Wynot had more chances going 10 for 19 from the line.

Wynot was led by Kenna Oligmueller with 11 points and Myrah Sudbeck with 10 points. Kayla Pinkelman went 5 for 5 from the freethrow line and just missed double figures with her nine points.

In a low scoring second quarter, the Lady Trojans cut into Wynot’s lead.

Wynot would only get a basket inside from Kenna Oligmueller and a conventional bucket and freethrow by Myrah Sudbeck as Cedar cut the Lady Blue Devil lead to 21-17 at halftime.

In the third quarter the Lady Trojans only managed a pair of Grace Wortman baskets and a couple of freethrows from Addison Walter. PONCA — The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans out-lasted Ponca, 27-22, on the road Jan. 23.

If the scoring was hard to come by in the game with the Lady Blue Devils, it was darn-right nearly impossible with the Lady Indians.

Both teams shot under 30 percent from the field and less than 10 percent from the three-point line as the Lady Trojans scrapped to the 27-22 win.

Cedar Catholic held Ponca to just three points the entire second half as it claimed the win.

The Lady Trojans actually failed to score in the first frame and trailed 19-8 heading into the intermission, but a 19-3 run in the final 16 minutes earned the victory.

Anisten Wortmann paved the way for the Cedar Catholic offense with 10 points in the contest. Katelyn Arens tacked on six and Lauren Bernecker tossed in five.

The conference tournament opened Jan. 29 with the Lady Trojans traveling to West Point to take on the No. 2-seeded Guardian Angels Central Catholic at the Lady Bluejay’s gym.

GACC, 14-1, won that contest 59-29 and will now take on the winner of Battle Creek and Boone Central in the semifinals at 7:45 p.m. back in the West Point gym.

The consolation bracket will get underway Feb. 1 at the Werner Activities Center with games at 6 p.m. and 7:45 p.m..

Cedar will take on the loser of the Battle Creek and Boone Central game in the consolation bracket in the late game.
