Wynot boys earn upset win over Niobrara-Verdigre

NIOBRARA — The Wynot Blue Devils got off to a quick first quarter start and then make that lead stand up for the rest of the game as they upset the Niobrara-Verdigre Cougars by a 48-23 margin on Tuesday night at Niobrara.

The win improved the Blue Devils season mark to 5-8 and dropped the Cougars record to 7-6 this season.

The Blue Devils were led by the duo of Peyton Wieseler and Anthony Haberman with 13 points each. Garrett Lange had a solid first half and contributed 12 points to the win.

Niobrara-Verdigre would struggle offensively and got five points from Chase Pritchett and four points each by Rane Vesley and Trenton Bauer.

It was a real team effort in the first quarter as Wynot’s defense held the Cougars to just four points while they got six points in the paint from Garrett Lange and three pointers by Peyton Wieseler and Anthony Haberman and went on a 18-4 run to take an early advantage.

Scoring slowed in the second quarter as Niobrara-Verdigre got a 3-pointer by Chase Pritchett and a conventional three points from Preston Crosley. Wynot got buckets by Garrett Lange, Trystan Heimes and Hunter Heimes to keep their halftime lead at 26-10.

The Blue Devils would struggle offensively early in the third quarter as Niobrara-Verdigre try to rally behind a pair of field goals by Rane Vesely and buckets by Kenny Justo, Camden Justo and Trenton Bauer. Wynot got five points late by Anthony Haberman and hit their free throws to fight off the comeback attempt and maintained a 36-20 lead.

Early in the fourth quarter Wynot got treys by Anthony Haberman and Peyton Wieseler and another basket in close by Garrett Lange after which reserves finish the game and Wynot earned the 48-23 win.
