Wildcats pick up wins over Plainview, Winside

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — The Hartington-Newcastle Wildcats flexed their defensive muscles last week in wins over Winside and Plainview.

The Wildcats held Plainview to just two points Tuesday in the first frame. The visitors were able to hit for nine in the second stanza, but that still left them in a 26-11 hole at the halftime break.

The Purple and White eased up in the second half as the Pirates managed a 21-18 scoring advantage, but it was too little, too late as HNS hung on for the 44-32 win.

A trio of HNS athletes hit for double figures to lead the offense on the night.

Sam Harms led the way with his 16-point effort. Shaye Morten and Matthew Meisenheimer followed him with 10 points each. Rebounding was led by a balanced effort as Teagan Scoggan led the way with five.

The Cats were able to find their range most of the night, hitting on 15-38 from the floor and 4-13 from beyond the arc.

HNS raced out to a 17-3 first-quarter advantage, then hung a 25-4 run on Winside in the second frame, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Shaye Morten, to give the home team a 42-7 halfime lead.

Coach Nick Haselhorst substituted generously in the contest, getting all of his players into the game. The result meant eight different Wildcats got into the scoring column, four of which hit for double figures.
