Trojans start season with sweep
— Mike Renning Cedar County News RANDOLPH — Cedar Catholic opened the volleyball season at Randolph in a triangular and came away with a pair of sweeps over Randolph and Homer on Aug. 25 in Randolph.
The Lady Trojans disposed of the hosts 25-20 and 25-13 in the best-of-three sets match.
'We really put together two solid matches,' Cedar Catholic coach Denae Buss said. 'And we highlighted some things to work on - like starting faster.'
Laney Kathol did the lion's share of the damage offensively with seven kills against the Lady Cardinals and nine against the Lady Knights.
She also had seven ace serves against both teams each - not total.
'The overall play and quickness of our offense was very nice to see,' Buss said. 'We have a very deep bench and they all contributed tonight.'
The Lady Trojans, who are gathering plenty of attention as a quality team in their league and class across the Mid-State and Nebraska, had little trouble in turning back both in the triangular.
In fact, prior to defeating the Lady Cardinals, Cedar Catholic had little trouble in defeating Homer 25-15, 25-15 to end the night 2-0 on the young season.
'It's early and we have plenty to work on,' Buss said. 'But I was pleased with the way we started the year.'
It was Kathol's nine-kill match in two sets. Meredith McGregor set up a dozen assists while Grace Wortmann added three winners in the match.
Cedar Catholic was set to play Lutheran High Northeast on Aug. 30 before heading to the Columbus Scotus tourney over the weekend on Sept. 3.
