The schedule is getting tougher for local football teams

Posted in:

The Cedar Catholic Trojans put up another 50-point effort Friday to improve to 5-0 on the year.

The Trojans handed BRLD a 50-8 setback.

It was also the opening win in district play for the Trojans who will match up with Crofton (2-2) 7 p.m. Friday.

The Trojans may be one of the hottest teams in Class C2, but they are maintaining a level head.

“We know we have won our first five games, but we have some great challenges ahead of us, so we need to be focused each and every day,” Cattau said. “We have shown some very good balance in our offense and we will need to continue to improve ourselves each day. Defensively, we really need to become better tacklers. We work on it a lot, but we still need to make it a positive aspect for our team.

“I know the kids are not satisfied with where we are, and they are continuing to work to keep getting better.”

That will be tested against their rivals from Crofton.

“Their two losses are to possibly the top two teams in our class,” Cattau said. “We will need to be very fundamentally sound in all three aspects of the game. Crofton is very tough and physical so we will need to be up to that challenge.

“Our goal from the beginning of our season has been to win our district. If we can do that, we will automatically qualify for the playoffs. At this point we aren’t really worried about what could happen in another month. We just need to work each day on improving ourselves as a team.”

Wildcats look to rebound against tough Luth High NE

The district opener was unkind for the Hartington-Newcastle Wildcats who were beaten by Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, 60-16.

Despite the defeat, Wildcat Coach Corey Uldrich is liking the progress with his younger players.

“We were able to give a lot of very young kids playing time last week, and I think they are going to be better for it as we move forward,” he said. “I think our depth is going to be improved as we continue through the year, but we must find some consistent play at every position to be more competitive.”

The Cats have got some work to do if they want to get back into the win column, Uldrich said.

“We’re going to need to shore up some play in our offensive line, and we’re going to need some players to step up defensively and make some tackles if we want to make the postseason.”

Having lost two games because of COVID-19 shutdowns, the Wildcats will need to do some heavy lifting to get into the playoffs.

Uldrich thinks two wins in the last three games may be needed to earn a trip to postseason.

The Cats will have their hands full with the Eagles Thursday night. LHNE is rated eighth in the state by Huskerland Prep Report. HNS will host Elkhorn Valley next week before taking on another staterated team when they travel to Wakefield for the regular season finale.

“With the games off our schedule that don’t count for the playoffs, a 2-3 record very well could get into the playoffs,” Uldrich said.

He’d like to see his team win its way into post-season, though and not back into a spot.

The Series

Cedar Catholic will renew one of the oldest rivalries in school history when the Crofton Warriors come to town Friday night.

Cedar holds a 34-23 edge in the series, which began in 1957. The Trojans have outscored the Warriors 1007-693 in that timespan.

The Trojans are hoping for their fourth straight win over the Warriors. The last time Crofton earned the ‘W’ was in 2016 when they pulled out a 28-20 victory over Cedar.

Here is a snapshot at the past 30 years in the series.
