Cedar offense shifts into another gear to steam past BRLD

Posted in:

BANCROFT — The Cedar Catholic ground game continued to produce yards and wins Friday night.

Easton Becker ran 16 times for 105 yards and three touchdowns while Tate Thoene (97 yards) and Ty Thoene (35 yards) each added a touchdown run in Cedar’s lopsided 50-8 win over BRLD.

Tate Thoene completed 10 of 16 passes for 194 yards and two more touchdowns via the air route, two to Myles Thoene who caught 105 yards worth of passes.

The Trojans opened the contest with an eightplay drive, but it stalled out on a fourth-down play at midfield. The Cedar defense stepped, though, forcing BRLD to punt after just three plays.

The Trojans responded with an 11-play, 89- yard drive to score on a one-yard Easton Becker plunge with 3:45 left in the opening stanza. Blake Arens split the uprights to put the Trojans on top 7-0.

The Blue and Silver had more success the next time they touched the ball as they were able to gain a first down before the Trojan “D” shut them down.

Tate Thoene sandwhiched an eight-yard run between passes to MylesThoene and Carter Arens to quickly move the Trojans into the Red Zone on their next drive.

Thoene then ran a QB keeper to the BRLD seven-yard line before handing off to Easton Becker who steamed into the endzone on the next play.

That series started a 28-point scoring barage for the Trojans that resulted in a 35-0 halftime lead.

Cedar Catholic Coach Chad Cattau was pleased with his team’s effort.

“I thought we played a very team-oriented game,” Cattau said. “All of our kids got to play some snaps so that was exciting for us. We were really able to have some very nice balance between running the ball and through the air. Our receivers made some nice plays on the ball and that really helped open things up for us. The offensive line did some really good things for us in pass protection and in the running game.

The effort of the Cedar defense, was just as solid as that of the offense, holding BRLD to just 78 rushing yards and only 10 first downs on the night.

“Defensively we were able to get four interceptions and a fumble recovery so getting that many turnovers was really exciting for our defense,” Cattau said. “We will need to continue to win the turnover battle each week as the season progresses.”
