Navy sinks Creighton; Royals drop game to O’Neill

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — The Hartington Navy Pony League team used a great pitching performance from Grady Haberer to sink Creighton 2-1 in a game played on June 29 in Hartington.

Haberer allowed only one hit in his six innings of work from the mound, while striking out nine Creighton batters. His pitching effort paced the Navy to the win despite his team committing five errors in the contest.

Ryan Hoebelheinrich got aboard in the bottom of the second inning with a walk and then stole second and third base before scoring on a Creighton error to put Hartington up 1-0.

Cash Lenzen then walked in the third frame, advanced to second on a passed ball and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on another error on a ground ball hit by Haberer.

It was all of the runs Haberer needed, although Creighton did score an unearned run in the fifth inning to get to the 2-1 final score.

The Hartington Royal Pony League team dropped a 9-0 decision to O’Neill on June 29 as its bats were silenced by O’Neill pitching in a game played in Hartington.

Three O’Neill pitchers combined to throw a twohitter in the contest and the O’Neill offense broke open a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with three runs and then added six in the fifth frame.

Lane Heimes and Cash Lenzen registered the only hits for the Royals.

The Navy and the Royal teams were set to face each other on July 6 to close out their respective seasons.

The Royals head into that contest with a 9-4 record while the Navy sits at 11-1.

The Hartington Tournament Pony League team is set for action in the Quad County Tournament July 13-17 before the Quad County All-Star Game on July 23.
