Mother Nature doesn’t stop Bears

Posted in:

WAKEFIELD — Mother Nature gave it her all as the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears traveled to Wakefield to take on the Trojans in district action Sept. 29.

She interrupted the game for about an hour, but when things settled down, the Bears dominated Wakefield to improve to 3-3 on the season with a couple of key games remaining on the schedule.

The weather didn’t wipe out the game, but it did wipe out the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge statistics program, leaving the coaches scrambling to recreate the statistics via a YouTube video, which was not completed at the time of publication of this story.

“I’m not sure what happened, but it sure messed up our stats,” LCC head coach Alan Gottula said. “We hope to have them all redone later in the week.”

The game was played and finished and the Bears walked off the field with a 48-12 victory.

“Our kids played well considering we had a long break during the game,” Gottula said. “We got refocused and got out of there with the win.”

The victory sets up two vitally important games left on the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge schedule.

The Bears will host Hartington-Newcastle Oct. 6 in a must-win game for both teams with respect to the impending state playoffs, which will begin in a couple of weeks.

The Wildcats are 2-4 on the season, but don’t rest on the record alone.

Hartington-Newcastle lost its first four games of the season to four teams with a combined record of 23-1.

Wynot, Plainview and Crofton are all 6-0 on the season while Elkhorn Valley is 5-1.

Since the four losses, the Wildcats have won back-toback games against Wakefield and the Tri County Northeast Wolfpack, a team that came into its contest with Hartington-Newcastle with a shiny 4-1 record last week and left with a 48-8 setback at the hands of the Wildcats.

The Wolfpack loom in the final week of the regular season on the road for LCC.

“We hope to build momentum from here in our final two games,” Gottula said.
