Lady Bears earn split against area foes

LAUREL — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Lady Bears volleyball team split a pair of matches last week with a sweep over Creighton in Lewis and Clark Conference action Sept. 28 and a 3-1 loss to Pierce Sept. 26.

The Lady Bears had little trouble in the sweep over the Lady Bulldogs, winning the first set 2515, running away with the second set 25-9 and grabbing the sweep with a 25-12 win in set three.

Rena Rasmussen and Mallory Eriksen spiked the Laurel-Concord- Coleridge attack with 14 and 13 kills, respectively.

Tyler Recob and Tali Erwin each added six winners and Delaney Johnson registered five.

Rasmussen and Eriksen also had a fine night at the service line as they both served up three aces in the match.

Carlie Kvols and Avery Hahne each contributed a pair of winners from the line; Erwin and Lainey Schutte each had one.

Eriksen completed a doubledouble with 16 digs; Erwin and Rasmussen each added nine while Hahne had six.

Kvols tipped up 35 set-assists to get the offense started for the Lady Bears.

For the second time in less than a week, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge took on Pierce in a regular-season match-up after dropping a 25-19, 26-24 match to the Lady Bluejays in the Wakefield Invitational on Sept. 23.

The Lady Bears came out swinging in the match held in Laurel and took the opening set, 25-18.

Pierce responded to take set two, 25-21, but the Lady Bears answered in the third set before falling 26-24.

The Lady Bluejays, which improved to 19-1 on the season, finished the match in set four with a score of 25-22.

Rasmussen had another strong night at the net with 18 kills in the match. Eriksen added seven and Erwin had three.

Kvols had 27 assists in the four-set match and Rasmussen recorded three ace serves.

Schutte and Erwin had 14 and 13 digs, respectively, and Eriksen made 25 good passes to get the offense going.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge will take a 13-8 record to the court when hosting Hartington-Newcastle in a conference match before heading to Hartington for the Hartington-Newcastle Invitational on Oct. 7.

The next regular-season match for the Lady Bears is back in Hartington on Oct. 10 to take on Cedar Catholic.
