Lady Trojans earn a split during recent action

HARTINGTON - The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans split a couple of games last week here at the Msgr. Werner Activities Center, winning a game over O’Neill 47-43 in Mid State Conference action on Dec. 8 after dropping a game to perennial Class B power South Sioux City 47-40 on Dec. 5.

In the 47-43 win over the Lady Eagles, the two teams played evenly the entire game before the Lady Trojans overcame a third-quarter deficit to win by four points down the stretch.

Cedar Catholic led by a bucket after the first eight minutes, 11-9 and slightly increased the advantage to 22-18 by the intermission.

The Lady Trojans came out of the break a little frigid and managed just six points in the third frame.

Meanwhile, the O’Neill offense put up 14 points and took the lead from the Lady Trojans as the teams headed into the final period with the Lady Eagles in front, 32-28.

Cedar Catholic worked its way back to even in the final eight minutes and outscored the Lady Eagles 19-11 to come away with the win.

Addison Walter led a very balanced Cedar Catholic scoring attack with nine points. Katy Jones, Katelyn Arens and Samantha Pick each contributed eight and Lauren Bernecker and Bailey Hochstein each tossed in six.

Walter and Pick each had seven rebounds. Arens and Anisten Wortmann had six boards apiece Bernecker had four rebounds and handed out four assists.

In the loss to the Lady Cardinals, South Sioux City methodically grabbed the early lean and increased it throughout the contest to lead by eight points at the end of the third quarter.

Cedar Catholic did win the final eight minutes but the damage was done and South Sioux City Came away with the seven-point win.

Bernecker paced the Lady Trojans with 10 points on the night, Pick added eight and Jones tossed in seven. Walter tacked on six and Arens contributed five points.

On the glass, Walter pulled down eight missed shots, Bernecker had six and Pick and Arens each grabbed four.

On Dec. 11, the Lady Trojans traveled to Norfolk for a Mid State Conference date with Norfolk Catholic and dropped a tight 48-46 contest. Statistics were not available at press time, but will be reported in next week’s Cedar County News. Cedar also took on Crofton Tuesday on the Lady Trojans homecourt.

Cedar will finish out the pre-holiday portion of the schedule against West Holt Dec. 15 and Dakota Valley on Dec. 19. Both games are set for Hartington.
