Lady Bears bounced from SubDistricts

Posted in:

CROFTON — The postseason volleyball experience for the Laurel-Concord- Coleridge Lady Bears was cut short in the opening round at Crofton in the C2-5 SubDistrict Tournament.

The Lady Bears came into the tournament as the No. 2 seed and took on Cedar Catholic, the No. 3 seed.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge had two wins over the Lady Trojans earlier in the season, a 2-0 sweep in the Wakefield Invitational back on Sept. 7, and a 3-2 best-of-five-sets match in Hartington on Oct. 10.

But it is the postseason and it’s win or go home unless you get a wildcard slot before the upcoming District tournaments.

The Lady Bears are sitting 22nd in the power points in Class C2, which makes it unlikely they will be afforded a spot in the District.

In the SubDistrict match with Cedar Catholic, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge got off to a slow start.

In fact, the Lady Bears trailed 8-0 right out of the gate and lost the first set, 24-14.

They responded in the second set and battled for every point, but the Lady Trojans got hot at the end of set two and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge was in a 2-0 set-hole after falling 25-22.

Cedar Catholic also took set three by a 25-21 score to sweep the match and move on in the tournament.

Complete statistics were not available at press time, but a statistical recap will be in next week’s Advocate.

Earlier last week, the Lady Bears played Bloomfield in the consolation match of the Lewis and Clark Conference Volleyball Tournament and came away with a come-from-behind 24-26, 25-21 and 25-15 win over the Queen Bees to take third place.

Rena Rasmussen and Tali Erwin sparked the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge attack with 16 and 10 slams, respectively. Rasmussen added four ace serves to her night and just missed a double-double with nine digs.

Mallory Eriksen and Lainey Schutte also had an ace serve in the match. Carlie Kvols did record a doubledouble with 34 set-assists and a dozen digs. Eriksen led the team with 14 digs and also made 14 successful passes. Rasmussen added 12 good receptions.

The statistical recap from the games with Homer and Wynot from earlier in the Lewis and Clark Conference tourney can be found below.
