Joseph Alan Ross

LAUREL — Joseph Alan Ross, 76, died Dec. 20, 2022.

A graveside tribute will be held 11 a.m., Oct. 13, at the Laurel Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tom Ross and Tim Ross.

Joeseph was born Nov. 4, 1946, to Paul L. and Alice Moore Ross, who farmed near Laurel. Joe attended Laurel-Concord schools until the Ross family moved to Odebolt, Iowa, in 1963. Joe graduated from Odebolt-Arthur High School in 1964. He enlisted in the U.S. Army later that year. After receiving basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., Joe was assigned to West Germany and was promoted to corporal. Joe returned to the U.S. upon completion of his enlistment in 1967.

Joe worked in construction trades. As an ironworker, he helped build the Gerald Gentleman power plant near Sutherland.

Joe enjoyed woodworking and was particularly interested in pre-World War ll machinery, automobiles and motorcycles. Joe spent much of his free time at libraries perusing vintage mechanical journals, from which he photocopied excerpts and compiled into spiral-bound books for his own enjoyment.

Joe was a lifelong bachelor who preferred a solitary life. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Paul. His brother, Andy, died in June 2023.

Joe is survived by his brothers, Tom (Lora), Loon Lake, Wash., and Tim (Ruthie), Denver, Colo.; his cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews.
