Hartington’s Russ Hochstein prepares to play in Super Bowl

FOXBORO, Mass.—Hartington’s hometown hero Russ Hochstein will be playing in the biggest game of his life—the Super Bowl.
The left guard of the NFL New England Patriots got his second start of the season in the 24-14 AFC Championship victory against the Indianapolis Colts.
Hochstein got the starting nod in the third game of the season when veteran left guard Damien Woody was injured. He will get the start again because Woody injured his knee in the win against Tennessee.
Breaks in the NFL come in various forms, Hochstein said.
“It’s unfortunate that someone else’s misfortune becomes your chance to play, but injuries sometimes play a major part of the game,” Hochstein said.
Hochstein said Sunday’s game against the Colts went as he expected — down to the wire.
“I was hoping to blow them out,” he said. “We knew they could score quickly so there so there was no relaxing out there. Our objective was to score and put up so many points, they couldn’t come back, but we ended up with more field goals then touchdowns and kept the game within their reach.”
Prior to the start of the game, there was quite a bit of talk about Hochstein moving into the starting role after only one previous NFL start.

HARTINGTON—The annual Hartington Chamber of Commerce banquet will be held Jan. 30 at the Hartington VFW Club. The event will feature several presentations including the presentation of the Community Service Award winner.

WYNOT—The Wynot Lady Blue Devils kept their win streak together with three more ‘W’s last week.
The Lady Devils, 10-2, and rated fifth in the latest Omaha World Herald D2 girls basketball poll, picked up wins over Omaha Nation and Niobrara last week.
Against Omaha Nation, the Lady Devils were led by Jackie Wieseler and Heather Gowery with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Emily Burbach also hit for double figures, contributing 10 points on the night.

OSMOND—The Hartington Wildcats overcame a nine-point fourthquarter deficit and then went on to outscore Osmond Tigers 11-4 in the overtime period and claim a 61-54 Lewis and Clark Conference win.

PIERCE—Turnovers and missed free throws came back to haunt the Cedar Catholic Trojans boys’ basketball team.
Cedar’s record dropped to 7-3 with the 50-44 loss to the Bluejays.
Kyle McCabe poured in 15 points to take top scoring honors for the Trojans. Tyler Dendinger also hit double figures as he knocked down 11 points.

WYNOT—The Omaha Nation Chiefs out shot Wynot 42 percent to 36 percent from the field and used a balance scoring attack to defeat their hosts 55-41.
