Gary D. Newton

LAUREL — Gary D. Newton, 72, Laurel, died April 1, 2020, at Unity Point St. Luke’s in Sioux City, Iowa.

Due to directed protocol put into effect by the State of Nebraska, the visitation for the general public has been cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but ask for the sake of the family to please sign the online guest register.

A private graveside service was held Monday at Laurel Cemetery, Laurel.

Arrangements were under the direction of Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home, Wakefield.

Gary was born in Bloomfield, the son of Alvin and Blanche (Seyl) Newton. The family moved to Laurel in 1965, when Gary was young and he graduated from Laurel High School. Gary married Sally Sue Smith Sept. 1, 1967, in Laurel. He joined the Air National Guard and was sent to Vietnam from 1968-1969. Gary worked in construction from the time he was 14 years old, eventually owning his own business. He helped renovate and build dream houses for many people over the years. Gary had a gift and a talent for building, that helped change Laurel’s landscape. He retired from construction at the age of 70. He loved all sports, Nebraska Football, the Green Bay Packers and the New York Yankees. Most of all he enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren’s activities.

Gary was a member of the Laurel Cemetery Board, the Laurel VFW and Cedar View Country Club. He enjoyed bowling and golfing and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Sally, Laurel; daughters, Angie (Scott) Rath, Laurel; Amy (Phil) Nicolas, Spicer, Minn.; Katie (Ryan) Kvols, Laurel; grandchildren, Riley Lund, Laurel; Shelby (Trent) Bottolfsen, Omaha; Hannah Lund, Omaha; Delaney and Sutton Ehlers, Laurel; Jake Rath, Laurel; Alex Kvols, Laurel; great-grandchildren, Abel Potosnyak, Laurel; Hayden and Beckett Bottolfsen, Omaha; a brother, Wayne Newton, Iowa; nephew, Dusty Newton, Kearney; niece, Tasha McIlnay, Kearney; and his best pal, his dog, Beth. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Jim,

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Jim, in 1952.
