Fast start isn’t enough for Lady Devils against GACC

WYNOT — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils suffered their first loss of the season Thursday at the hands of Guardian Angel Central Catholic.

After a blistering start that shocked the Lady Angels in the first period, the visitors would recover in the second and third quarter and they would go on to defeat the Lady Devils, 48-39.

Wynot was led by Katelyn Heine who got all of her nine points from three-point range. Shalee Planer would help out with eight points and Michaela Lange tossed in seven points for the Lady Blue Devils on offense.

GACC was led by Brenna Rief, who took scoring honors with 16 points, and Sophia Haas chipped in with her 13 points.

Wynot got off to a solid start as a pair of threepointers by Katelyn Heine and one by Shalee Planer along with Michaela Lange’s pair of baskets helped stake the Lady Devils to a quick 18-4 advantage.

The Guardian Angels rallied from long range as they rained in 4-5 shots from behind the arc. Livia Hunke hit twice and one each from Marissa Hunke and Brenda Rief powered a 17-5 run by the visitors and they cut the Lady Blue Devils lead to 23-21 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Lady Blue Devils’ struggles on offense continued, as the West Point team went on another run. The 14-6 run was fueled by three-pointers by Sophia Haase and Marissa Hunke to help West Point earn a 35-29 lead at the end of three periods.

Wynot got treys by Katelyn Heine and Autumn Lawson to cut the GACC lead to three points but seven points by Brenna Rief and 7-18 shooting from the free throw line helped the Lady Jays take the win.
