Cedar cruises past O’Neill for another win
O’NEILL — Coach Matt Steffen’s Cedar Catholic Trojans got off to a good start Friday, then just kept pounding away to earn their second straight MidStates Conference win of the season here Friday.
Cedar was led to the 65-46 MidState Conference victory by a balanced scoring attack as four Trojans hit for double figures, led by Tate Thoene’s 14-point effort.
Brady Steffen also had a stand-out game producing a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Cedar jumped out to a big 15-7 first-quarter lead, but allowed the Eagles to climb back into the contest in the second and third quarters as the host team outscored the Trojans, 29-23, over that 16-minute span to cut the Cedar lead to just two points, 38-36, heading into the final frame.
Cedar turned things up in that final frame to outscore the Eagles, 27-10, and seal the win.
The Eagles are a good team, and gave Cedar a good challenge, Coach Matt Steffen said
“O’Neill was a very fundamentally sound team, that gave us a lot of trouble with their 2-1-2 zone press and defense,” he said.
