Cedar freshman earns school record in Homer win

Posted in:

HOMER — Freshman Myles Thoene entered the Cedar Catholic history books in last Tuesday night’s 90-47 win over Homer.

“I knew I could hit threes. I had never hit that many before, but I knew I could,” said Thoene.

Thoene made ten 3-pointers to set the record for most individual 3-pointers made in a single game. The freshman broke the previous record from the 1998/99 season of eight held by Matt Hames.

“During the game someone told me I was at eight, and when I hit the next one that’s when I knew that I had broken the school record,” said Thoene.

The freshman made 10 of 15 shots from downtown, and he played only 18 minutes of the 32 minute game. He finished with 30 points on the night, going 10 for 16 from the floor.

“I made a couple to start, and then coach knew I was getting hot, so then he started giving me the ball more. I really liked that,” said Thoene. “My teammates were behind me and it helped.”

With Thoene leading the way, Cedar almost eclipsed the record for most 3-pointers made in a single game by a team. The record is 15, and the Trojans went 14 for 28 from long range.

Cedar started scoring slowly, but things exploded in the second quarter with Big Red scoring 28 points. Cedar went into halftime ahead 50-19. The Trojans even outdid that single quarter effort, scoring 32 in the fourth.

Matthew Becker quietly earned himself a double-double while Thoene drew the attention. The junior scored 11 points and grabbed 10 boards to lead his team on the glass. Cedar as a team grabbed 50 rebounds on the night, winning in that department with Homer grabbing just 24.

Cedar Catholic shot a lot, but the team made over half of its shots. Big Red went 37 for 71 from the floor, or 52.1 percent.

With the win, Cedar improved to 14-6 on the season.
