Blue Devils are looking to take the next step on the basketball court
WYNOT - Although the Wynot Blue Devils haven’t set foot on the basketball court this season, for practice or otherwise, the sky could be the limit for this bunch after completing a 24-5 record and appearance in the Class D2 finals last season.
The Wynot Blue Devil football team, which comprises the basketball team, was still playing football after reaching the D2 Football Championship.
Wynot made its 10th trip to Lincoln last season, including the third consecutive journey south. The Blue Devils also won a state title back in 2013.
The Blue Devils are poised to take the next step as they return four starters from last season’s squad with all four receiving allconference notice by the Lewis & Clark Conference coaches.
Zack Foxhoven and Dylan Heine return after all-conference season’s as juniors.
Chase Schroeder and Carson Wieseler also return after grabbing spots on the all-conference honorable mention list in 2022-23.
Also returning, for his 25th season on the Blue Devil bench is Lee Heimes, who has accumulated 362 wins, the state tournament accomplishments mentioned above all in Wynot, exudes a quiet confidence about this year’s team he will eventually roll out on the court.
“We will be a very competitive team,” he said. “We have the potential to be very good defensively and offensively.”
Joining the four seniors mentioned above will be classmates, Joseph Sudbeck and Korbin Guenther, who look to figure into Heimes’ plans this winter.
Also probable to find the court are juniors Andrew Haberman and Cooper Oligmueller; and sophomores, Devin Brummer, Killian Steinhaus, Kotner Koch and Kason Koch.
Other members competing for playing time Justin Heimes (10), Jed Nelson (10), Carter Hans (10), Kingston Hans, Nixon Heimes (9), Cash Lenzen (9), Braylon Hans (9) and Lane Heimes (9).
The Wynot schedule is full of Lewis & Clark Conference games, larger schools and non-conference match ups with the likes of Wayne, Cedar Catholic, Guardian Angels Central Catholic and Pender.
The Blue Devils have been assigned to the D2-5 Sub-District along with Hartington-Newcastle, Lyons-Decatur Northeast and Walthill.
Heimes listed the Blujays, Wausa and Winside as top threats in the district.
“This team has proven they aren’t afraid to work really hard in the past,” Heimes said. “We are a small, quick athletic team that could give teams some problems.”
The Blue Devils open the season Nov. 30 on the road at Bloomfield before a home contest with Winside on Dec. 1.
