LAUREL — Anthony Brandow of Laurel-Concord High School, sponsored by American Legion Post 54-Laurel, will join nearly 380 other high school juniors from across Nebraska participating in the American Legion Cornhusker Boys’ State May 31-June 6 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln downtown campus.

Brandow is not the first in his family to attend the program. He applied because of all the great things his family had said about it after they returned.

The annual citizenship program, sponsored by the Nebraska American Legion, is designed to provide youth with a better understanding of how city, county and state governments operate.

LOUISVILLE — Four guys from Giant A & M/TRUCKERMATS. com traveled to Kentucky for the largest truck show in the world. Darrin Barner, Chris Merkel and Eric Smith from the Laurel office and Pete Altieri from the California office joined ‘Trick My Truck’ and over 1,000 other vendors.

Tens of thousands of people attended the truck show and saw what TRUCKERMATS.com has to offer them.

People from all of the world were there to see what was available. Smith talked with four men who traveled from Norway.

“It’s not every day that you get to tell an Ole and Lena joke to people that live in Norway!” Smith laughed. “After talking about our products I couldn’t pass up the chance.”

TRUCKERMATS.com shared space with ‘Trick My Truck’ and the two groups worked together to promote each other.

“Kelvin, Rob and Rhino are great guys to work with,” Barner said. “They asked us to be involved with them for some type of promotion at different locations each night.”

Their booth was very popular and there were always people in line to get autographs and look at products that are available.

They were even visited by another Nebraskan. Scott Ruwe from Arlington stopped by the booth after winning second place in the ‘Show and Shine’ truck show contest and also second place in the ‘Best Interiors’ contest.

‘Trick My Truck’ had one of their finished trucks at the show. The ‘Wake Maker,’ owned by Matt and Cindy Kolb, Carlisle, Ill., was on display for all that attended the show. The ‘Wake Maker’ is a 1988 Peterbulit Model 379.

Barner said that the small southern Illinois town – with a population of about 400 – was unexpectedly about five times its size after the Kolbs put an ad in the town paper to invite people to watch ‘Trick My Truck’ when their truck was revealed.

They thought maybe 75 people would come over for sloppy joes and snacks but 2,500 people showed up to watch with them.

They will be traveling to various shows throughout the next year with ‘Trick My Truck’ and also independently. April 3, 2019

VERMILLION, S.D. — Area residents got the chance Wednesday to share their views about the future of Goat Island.

After decades of uncertainty surrounding the legal ownership of the island, a land survey determined the island belongs to the federal government and will be administered by the National Park Service.

Federal officials on hand for the National Park Service Open House at the W.H. Over Museum here were pleasantly surprised with the large turn out.

Over 120 people showed up during the two-hour listening session which was designed to get public input on the proposed management plan for the 800-acre Missouri River island. There were just about as many opinions about the island that sits north of Brookey Bottom on the northern border of Cedar County as there were people to express them.
