1999: County deals with former Sheriff’s bookkeeping, budgeting issues

HARTINGTON — Gerald Stevens was presented the 1993 Hartington Community Distinguished Service Award at the Chamber of Commerce banquet this past Saturday. Stevens currently works part time at the Bank of Hartington as an executive vice president. He retired from his fulltime position with the bank last year.

HARTINGTON — Frances Slope was named Resident of the January Resident of the Month at the Hartington Nursing Center. She came to the Center in 1992.

HARTINGTON — Brian Roberts, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Roberts, was crowned champion at Hartington Public School for the National Geography Bee competition sponsored by “National Geographic” magazine January 3-5.

HARTINGTON — Colin Kathol and Monica Bakke have announced their engagement. They will be married in a private, civil ceremony on February 5 at Horsecreek in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The couple and their children will reside in Hartington.

HARTINGTON — Greta Bottolfsen, a freshman at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, has been awarded a $500 scholarship from the Aid Association for Lutherans. She is the daughter of Gary and Terri Bottolfsen. Jan. 13, 1999

HARTINGTON—Cedar County’s new Board of Commissioners made an immediate impact when they held their first meeting Tuesday. Political newcomers Frederick Pinkelman and Dick Donner were sworn into office last week. It didn’t take long for the to get down to business.

HARTINGTON—The Cedar County Sheriff’s Department was left in a financial mess by former Sheriff Allan Guern. New Sheriff Loren Trautman said several budget items have been completely depleted. Worse yet, he said, there is not an accurate accounting for expenditures.

HARTINGTON—Kelly Schommer, 31, was injured when he and some friends were attempting to tow his vehicle out of a ditch. Schommer, who was sitting in his vehicle at the time of the accident, was hit in the head when the ball hitch came loose and flew through his windshield. He is currently in the intensive care unit at Marian Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa.

NEWCASTLE—Hartington’s girls and boys’ basketball teams both earned runner-up honors during action at the Classic Tournament here last week.

HARTINGTON—Myron Riddle was honored Saturday as Hartington’s Community Servant of the year. Riddle was nominated for the award for his many years of service to the community, school, youth programs and church organizations.

HARTINGTON—The City Auditorium will soon have more than just basketball and volleyballs echoing through the halls. The sounds of actors reciting lines should soon be heard in the 80-year old building. The City Council gave the Cedar County Theatre Assoc. permission to go ahead with plans to utilize the auditorium stage.

HARTINGTON—Cattle producers in Cedar County and around the nation continue to take a “wait and see” attitude with market reaction from the discovery of a positive BSE or Mad Cow test in Washington state.
