YANKTON, S.D. — A battle which may decide the fate of several farming enterprises in Nebraska and South Dakota appears to have begun, and some Cedar County residents are among those involved.

The Associated Press reported Monday that “about 100” farmers have been notified by Valley State Bank in Yankton, S.D., that their loans are being called.

In an official announcement Monday, Valley State President Bill Henry said the wire service story is inaccurate. Henry said that only 12 farmers received such notices. Four or five are in Nebraska, he said.

Farmers, meanwhile, were scheduled to meet Wednesday night at Joe’s Steakhouse in South Yankton to discuss the situation. Meeting organizers say they hope to come up with a course of action which will cause Valley State to reconsider.

HARTINGTON — A task force was formed in Hartington this week to coordinate efforts in an on-going fight against drug and alcohol abuse. It was formed in response to the increasing awareness of the human suffering caused by these problems, and in response to the concern about the alarming statistics on the tragedies caused by mixing alcohol and driving, according to organizers.

For some time community leaders have recognized this as an area of concern. A study by the Holy Trinity Family Ministry team drew further attention to this need and to the many programs which are available if a community wants to tap into them.

In order to do this, however, an organization has to be set up to decide on the various options.

Representatives of the schools, the churches and the community-at-large were asked to serve on the task force for that purpose.
