1996: Hochstein signs letter of intent to play football for Huskers

HARTINGTON — Cedar Catholic football Coach Terry Kathol and athletic director Tom Schoenfelder looked on as senior Russ Hochstein signs a letter of intent to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and play football for Coach Tom Osborne’s Cornhusker football team.

Hochstein, who was offered a scholarship last October, became the first Cedar Catholic player to accept an NCAA Division I athletic scholarship. The timing couldn’t have been better, as the team is coming off of its second straight national championship.

Feb. 14, 1996

HARTINGTON — An old tradition will come back to life this year. Schuetzenfest, a German festival, celebrated here until the outbreak of World War II, will bring this small northern Cedar County Community together this summer.

In commemoration of the Bow Valley Park Association centennial, the Park board and members of the community will try to re-create the event the community’s fore-fathers began in 1896.

HARTINGTON — Area residents were recently informed by local Mid-America Dairy plant manager Blaine Gomer that his plant would undergo a $4.8 million modernization and expansion project this year.

Gomer ended rumors about the plant’s demise when he told Hartington Chamber of Commerce members about the expansion project.

The Hartington FFA Chapter is hoping to turn 11 straight years of state FFA championships into a perfect dozen.

The Chapter which is comprised of students from Hartington Public School and Cedar Catholic High School has a long tradition of statewide success.

Even though new teachers now hold the reigns of the highly successful program; The students’ desire to win, is still there.

HARTINGTON — A Hartington business has hit the big time. One of the stars on the popular reality television series “Jersey Shore” has entered into an agreement to help promote a downtown Hartington business.

Nicole “Snook!” Polizzi from the “Jersey Shores” TV show has signed a license agreement with Comfy Feet, which is owned and operated by Keith Eickhoff.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Cedar County rodeo rider Mike Burcham is still hospitali7ed recovering from injuries sustained in the Jan. 29 Fort Worth Rodeo and Stock Show.

Burcham, a veteran saddle bronc rider, was hurt when his horse bucked him off.

HARTINGTON — With the filing deadline less than a week away, several incumbents have yet to file for another term.

There are still 13 school filings open and six city filings open.

The Hartington-Newcastle School Board has the most seats up for election, and the most vacancies. The recently merged school district is reducing the number of seats on the board from nine to six.

As of Tuesday, Dale Blatchford, Jr., was the only one of the six HNS Board members up for election to file. Other incumbents yet to file are: Ron Pearson, Gerri Jueden, Doug Miller, Dana Rosener and Bryan Gotch.

Hartington City Council members Deb Addison and Chris Bartling are also up for re-election, but have not yet filed for another term in office. There is only one election for a Cedar County official this year.

District 2 Commissioner Jerry Wiese has filed for another term. He will be challenged by Craig Bartels, Belden.
