1988: Filips celebrates Youth Vision Day in special way

HARTINGTON — Snow blanketed northeast Nebraska last weekend. This area received estimated amounts of anywhere from 14 to 20 inches. Winds during the storm reached between 45 and 50 miles per hour.

HARTINGTON — Three students, ranging in age from 17-70 years old, have successfully finished tests through the Hartington-based Adult Basic Education (ABE).

HARTINGTON — Drs. Roger and Susan Filips gave free eye examinations and glasses to 10 school students for Youth Vision Day on Nov. 18.

The two doctors examined children from Orchard, Winnetoon, Creighton, Fordyce, Hartington, Wynot and Coleridge.

HARTINGTON — Walking and exercise enthusiasts won’t have to curtail their activities this winter, thanks to a program set to begin at Hartington Public School.

Starting Monday, the building will be open at 6 a.m. for people wishing to walk, run or lift weights.

The growing interest in walking and other forms of exercise prompted Supt. Don Flakus to recommend the plan to the School Board.

HARTINGTON — Two separate automobile accidents on rural roads in northern Cedar County have claimed the lives of two people.

Killed in a Thanksgiving Day accident was George J. Jansen, 61, of Crofton. Shawn Duhacek, 17, Yankton, S.D. died Friday in Sioux Falls, S.D. where he had been hospitalized after a Nov. 9 accident. Mr. Jansen, who was alone in the vehicle, was pinned under the vehicle he was driving after he apparently lost control and the vehicle rolled, according to a report from the Nebraska State Patrol. The accident occurred at 1 p.m., one-half mile east of Menominee.

Mr. Duhacek lost control of the car he was driving and was thrown from it when it rolled. The accident occurred on a county road a mile and a half south and nine miles east of Yankton.

HARTINGTON— Gary Heimes has been promoted to NPPD’s Northern Regional Manager at Norfolk. Heimes, a 1963 Wynot High School graduate, has worked for NPPD since 1967. He had been serving as the District Manager at Hartington. Traci L. Bender will succeed Heimes as the District Manager at Hartington.

HARTINGTON— The Hartington City Council took the first step Nov. 23 toward getting the Felber Park swimming pool replaced or rebuilt.

The Council agreed to ask a bond holding company to begin the necessary paperwork so an election could be held in May, 1994. Council members hope to have the project approved soon enough so that the pool could be used in 1995.

HARTINGTON — The Senior Parliamentary Procedure team of the Hartington FFA Chapter won first place at the District FFA Speech and Demonstration contests. They will now compete in the state contest.
