1979: Hartington FFA members compete in District event

HARTINGTON — A Rose & Opfer Construction Company employee, Gary Juergen, of Fordyce, was seriously injured in a freak accident at Carhart Lumber Company last Monday morning.

Juergens suffered severe facial cuts, including a partially severed nose, when apparently a chain saw that he was raising to saw through a post, accidentally slipped form his grasp and fell into his face. Juergens was operating the saw while standing on a ladder, it was reported.

HARTINGTON — The Hartington FFA Chapter sent eight of its members to Erickson for the District Livestock Judging Contest, Thursday, Jan. 4. There were 16 schools out of 18 in the District attending the contest.

The Hartington Junior team took 1st place with a total of 1468 to a second place score of 1451 by Ewing.

All four members of the junior team were in the top half of judgers with Tim Foster receiving a blue ribbon and third place, Kelly Lammers tied for 5th and 6th place and also received a blue ribbon, Tim Harms received 13th place and a red ribbon, and Roland Stratman came in 41st.

In the Senior Division, Hartington came in 2nd only to Atkinson West Holt by one, 1929 to 1928.

Chuck Meirose received a 3rd place and a blue ribbon, Bill Nissen with a blue and 10th place, Kevin Uhing a red ribbon and 14th place, and Karl Koch with a white and 23rd place. Both teams from Hartington have qualified for state in April during the state convention.

HARTINGTON— The Hartington High Wildcats once more improved their season record as they hosted Ponca, Friday night, January 19, in the twelfth game of the season, with a 59 to 53 victory.

The Wildcats fell behind early in the second quarter but a great team defensive effort along with a vocal Hartington crowd, helped the Wildcats regain the lead and go on to win a victory over the Indians. Ponca hit on 23 of 53 shots and ended the game with a 43% field goal percentage.
