Roman was born Oct 9, 1931, to Alphonse and Margaret (Burbach) Wortmann at the family farm south of Bow Valley. He attended Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Elementary School, Bow Valley, and high school at Conception Seminary, Conception, Mo., and Trinity Heights High School, Sioux City, Iowa, graduating in 1949. Upon graduation, Roman started farming at the family farm. Roman was introduced to his life-long sweetheart Wilma Bruns July 20, 1952, at the very first dance at the Skylon Ballroom in Hartington. They were married Sept 10, 1953, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Bloomfield. Roman and Wilma were blessed with eight children, 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. In addition to farming, Roman worked as a salesman for Wonder Life Corporation and Capitol American Insurance. He also enjoyed his roles working in Cedar County as Weed Superintendent and Handi-bus driver before retiring.
Roman was a man with a tender heart. A faith-filled soul who rarely spoke ill of anyone or anything. He was a man ahead of his time when he converted the family farm to organic production in the mid-1970s. Roman was a man who stood for what he believed in and was known to say “I’m a lover, not a fighter.” He had a dry sense of humor and enjoyed playing cards with card club friends and singing and dancing with his sweetheart. In his golden years, Roman enjoyed traveling and getting out on the open road.
Roman was a lifelong member of Ss. Peter & Paul parish, a 48-year member of the church choir, and a member of the Catholic Order of the Foresters, the Bow Valley Park Association and the National Farmers Organization.
Roman is survived by his eight children, Steve Wortmann, Freedom, Pa.; Ellen (Scott) Hochstein, Skiatook, Okla.; Mike (Jackie) Wortmann, Norfolk; Marcia (Jon) Kathol, Fayetteville, Ark.; Tom Wortmann, Blair; Julie (Ron) Stratman, Salina, Kan.; Janet (Scott) Schrempp, Hartington; Amy (John) Giorgio, Elk Point, S.D.; sisters, Ruth Foxhoven, Crofton; Gloria McDonald, Boise, Idaho; and Ethel Wortmann, St. Paul, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Judy Bruns, Bloomfield, and Arlis Erickson, Norfolk; and brother-in-law, Art Huber.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Wilma, July 17, 2014, at the age of 82; daughters-in-law, Kitsy (Buchanan) Wortmann and Cecilia (Klosner) Wortmann; granddaughter, Jennifer Wortmann; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rita (Wortmann) and Andrew Steffen; Betty (Wortmann) and Victor Nissen; brothers-in-law, Gerald Foxhoven, Chuck McDonald, Robert Bruns and Gary Erickson; sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law, Shirley (Bruns) and Gerald Fink, Viola (Bruns) and Galen Suhr, and Mary (Bruns) and Marlin Barger.
