Jerome grew up on a farm east of Hartington and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1955. Jerome served in the military from 1955-1957. He then worked for a Veterinary clinic in Casper, Wyo., before moving back to Hartington in 1958. Jerome married Eleanor M. Heine Nov. 28, 1959, in Bow Valley. Jerome worked for the Cedar Knox Public Power District for over 30 years. Jerome and Eleanor had three children, Margie, Tom, and Jerry.

He played football for his Military base at Fort Benning, Ga., while serving in the Army. He later coached football at Cedar Catholic in the mid-1960s.
