BOW VALLEY — Alice M. Uhing, 89, Bow Valley, died at her residence Sept. 23, 2026, surrounded by her family. Mass of Christian Burial was Sept. 26 at Holy Family (Sts. Peter & Paul) Catholic Church, Bow Valley, with the Rev. Marcus Knecht officiating. Burial was at Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery. Visitation and a vigil service were Friday, at church, and continued Saturday, one hour prior to services. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington. Pallbearers were Alice’s grandchildren.

Alice Marie Uhing was born July 16, 1937, at home in Petersburg, to Bernard “Ben” and Leona (Ternus) Borer. Alice spent her childhood in the Petersburg, Lindsay and Platte Center communities. She attended country school in Platte Center and graduated from Lindsay Holy Family in 1955, as part of a class of 17, the largest graduating class at that time. She continued her education at Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Yankton, S.D., graduating in 1958 as a Registered Nurse. Alice began her career at Sacred Heart Hospital and later devoted 25 years to the Hartington Nursing Home, serving the last 17 years as Director of Nursing.

After meeting Jerome Louis Uhing, Bow Valley, on a blind date, the two were married Nov. 29, 1958, in St. Bernard. They lived on a farm in Bow Valley until 1966, when they moved with their growing family to Columbus. Alice worked as a floor nurse at the Columbus Hospital, while Jerome continued developing his carpentry skills. In 1971, they returned to Bow Valley with their six children, settling into the home Jerome built — where their family’s story continued to unfold.

Family meant everything to Alice and Jerome. Through their example, they taught their children the importance of kindness, charity, hard work and faith. Alice formed lifelong friendships through her involvement in the Altar Society, Ladies Auxiliary and Rosary Club. She and Jerome treasured the friendships built through their long-standing card club. Alice loved canning, cooking and baking and was famous for her delicious potato salad. No one ever left her home hungry.

Alice was blessed with six children, Ann (Dave) Lund, Norfolk; Michael (Kathy Daily) Uhing, Bow Valley; Barbara (Dennis) Vollmer, Omaha; Cynthia Uhing, Bow Valley; Linda (Kenneth) Wilcox, Norfolk; Daniel (Karla Kudera) Uhing, Bow Valley; 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She is survived by her sister, Lou Ann (Roger) Noonan, Wahoo; brother and sisters-in-law, Rita Varilek, Tabor, S.D.; Margaret Bares, Tyndall, S.D.; Irene Kocmich, Tyndall, S.D.; Sandy Uhing, Fordyce; Rosemary and Dave Folkers, Bow Valley; and many nieces and nephews.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome Uhing; infant daughter, Mary Uhing; daughter-in-law, Kathy Uhing; grandson, Aaron Lund; infant grandchildren, Casey Vollmer, Amanda Uhing and Jamie Wilcox; great-grandson, Baker Wilcox; her parents, Ben and Leona Borer; siblings, Ben Borer and Helen (Carroll) Euteneuer; brother and sisters-in-law, Lenny and Rosella Uhing, Stanley Varilek, Charlie Bares, Leo Kocmich, Andrew Uhing, Francis and Gail Uhing, and MaryAnn Uhing.

Though she will be deeply missed, Alice’s legacy lives on in the family she cherished and the countless lives she touched through her generosity, her faith and her unwavering love.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites memorial contributions to a charity that will be designated at a later time.
