Interment was at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Osmond.

Visitation was Thursday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Jim died peacefully June 15, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family at the Osmond General Hospital, Osmond.

Stonacek Memorial Chapel in Osmond was in charge of the arrangements. Jim was born June 30, 1930, in Osmond, to Emil and Esther (Dewey) Broekemeier. He was baptized Sept. 7, 1930, by Pastor Holestion, and confirmed in his Christian faith April 18, 1943. Jim attended Immanuel Lutheran School and graduated from Osmond Community School. Jim married the love of his life, Margaret Behrens, Sept. 11, 1951, in Plainview. Together they built a life centered on faith, family and hard work. They were lifelong members of Immanuel Lutheran Church and spent their married years in the Osmond area. In 1965, they moved into the Broekemeier family homestead, where many cherished memories were made.

Jim dedicated much of his life to farming and worked the land until retiring in 1986. Never one to sit still, he began a second career with West-Hodson Lumber Yard, where he delivered lumber and became a familiar and friendly face throughout the community. His dedication, strong work ethic, and positive attitude earned him the distinction of Employee of the Year. Jim continued working there for nearly 40 years before retiring at the remarkable age of 80.

A man of deep faith and service, Jim devoted countless hours to his church and community. He taught Sunday School, served as a church elder, and was a member of the church board. He also served on the Milk Delegation Board and was a dedicated 4-H leader, helping to mentor and guide younger generations.

Jim will be remembered for his warm smile, often accompanied by a mischievous smirk that hinted at some playful shenanigans. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fishing, watching wildlife, completing puzzles, and spending time outdoors. Above all, Jim treasured time spent with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. His kindness, humor, wisdom and unwavering love for his family will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

Grateful for having shared his life are his beloved wife of nearly 75 years, Margaret (Behrens) Broekemeier; children, Susan (Timothy) Lenhoff, Randolph; Nyla (Dave) Jurrens,White, S.D.; and Larry (Colette) Broekemeier, Yankton, S.D.; daughter-in-law, Deb Broekemeier, Osmond; son-in-law, Joe Rumsey, Brunswick; 15 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbara (Marvin) Theis, Creighton; Judy (Gary) Acklie, Yankton, S.D.; and Rosie Jenkins, Gadsden, Ala.; sisters-in-law, Kathleen Broekemeier, Norfolk, and Lois Broekemeier, Ainsworth; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Esther Broekemeier; infant sister, Georgina; brothers, Gerald Broekemeier, Glen Broekemeier, Donald Broekemeier, Byron Broekemeier and Orville Broekemeier; sisters, Marian Block and Phyllis Rodgers; son, James Broekemeier; daughter, Sharon Rumsey; grandchildren, Mindy Lenhoff, Regina Lenhoff and Baby Boy Broekemeier; and great-grandson, Sean Blom.
