ALBANY, Ore. — Stephen Charles Backer, 93, Albany, Ore., died April 2, 2026, in Albany. A service will be April 16 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, beginning with the recitation of the rosary at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Steve was born Sept. 8, 1933, in Randolph, to Jacob and Martha (Meyer) Backer. The youngest of ten children, he grew up on the family farm, where he developed a strong work ethic alongside his father and brothers. He often shared fond stories of life with horses, cattle and a bit of youthful mischief. Steve married the love of his life, Marsha Brummer, Nov. 28, 1953, in Randolph. Together they built a life grounded in faith, family, and unwavering devotion, sharing 72 wonderful years of marriage.

After moving west, Steve worked as a truck driver delivering fuel to rural farmers before establishing himself in Albany, Ore., where he owned and operated a service station for over 40 years. Known for his mechanical skill, honesty, and steadfast loyalty, Steve earned the trust and respect of generations of customers and friends.

A devoted Catholic, Steve lived his faith quietly but deeply, demonstrating God’s love through his actions and guiding many family members in their own faith journeys. He was a proud member of the Elks and the Knights of Columbus.

Steve found great joy in life’s simple pleasures — camping, hunting, fishing, tending his garden, and working in the yard on sunny days. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family, especially watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren at their sporting events. He could fix just about anything and was known as the family’s go-to handyman.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife, Marsha; his children, Konnie (Rick) Perlenfein, Kris (Dan) King, Kelly (Kelli) Backer, and Kari (Brian) Lucero; and his daughter-in-law, Debbie (Jeff) Shaw. He was a proud grandfather to 18 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren, with two great-great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his sons, Kirby and Kimberly Backer, as well as seven brothers and two sisters.
