Mary Jane was born Jan. 11, 1933, in Fordyce, to Rudolph and Lucina (Becker) Schulte. She went to grade school at District 108 Brookside School and graduated from Holy Trinity High School, Hartington. Mary Jane married the love of her life, Fintan John Hoesing Jan. 30, 1952, in Bow Valley. Soon after their marriage, they purchased a farm and started building their lives and family together.
Mary Jane helped Fintan raise cattle, hogs and chickens along with helping with field work, raising corn, beans, oats and alfalfa. She also had a big garden that fed their seven children. She was a great baker, making her famous sticky buns, pies, cakes, desserts and always feeding guests, no one went away hungry. Her children all have memories of cranking homemade ice cream, a special treat, and coming home from school to the smell of homemade bread. Mary Jane still found time to always sew her children’s clothes, make quilts and do embroidery work. She was also the bookkeeper for their farming operation.
Her faith was very important to her as she was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the Sacred Heart Sodality.
Mary Jane is survived by her five children, Larry Hoesing, Creighton; Donna Hoesing, Yankton, S.D.; Arthur (Julie) Hoesing, Yankton, S.D.; Alfred (Monika) Hoesing, Maskell; Elmer (Jane) Hoesing, Coleridge; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one on the way; a sister, Norma Van Hove, Renner, S.D.; many nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Shirley McCloud, Yankton, S.D.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph and Lucina Schulte; husband, Fintan; sons, Bernard and Leonard; a grandson, Jerome; siblings, Richard Schulte, Sally (Henry) Borreson and Jeanette (Arnold) Tramp.
