RANDOLPH — Funeral service for Arthur “Art” J. Bermel Sr., 96, Randolph, was Oct. 14 at the St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph. Father Will Targy officiated the service.

Interment was at the St. Frances Catholic Cemetery, Randolph.

Military rites were conducted by the V.F.W. Alvin Kessler Post #5545, American Legion Post #113, and the United States Army Honor Guard.

Visitation was one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

Art died Oct. 9, 2025, at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home, Randolph.

Stonacek Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Art was born April 4, 1929, to Frank and Gertrude (Aschoff) Bermel in Randolph. He attended St. Frances School for 12 years, graduating from St. Frances High School in 1947 as Valedictorian. Art entered the military service Jan. 24, 1951, and was honorably discharged March 8, 1953, serving the entire time in the Inspector General Section, 10th Infantry Division, Ft. Riley, Kan. Art married Charline (Seyer) Spader Aug. 17, 1970, at St. Frances Catholic Church . She died in 2007. After marriage, Art and Charline farmed near Randolph. Art also worked for the United States Postal Service from 1956 to 1989.

Art was a lifelong supporter of St. Frances Catholic Church, serving as Vice-President of the charter Parish Council, four years on the Administrative Committee, one term on the Revenue Committee, four years as a choir tenor, and many years as commentator, lector and sacristan. For more than one third century he served as Toastmaster for the annual CCD Banquet. Art also served eight years as Vice-President of the Randolph School Board, and four years as a charter member of the Cedar County Zoning Committee.From 1998 to 2023, he served as Treasurer for the American Legion Post #113.

Art is survived by his three sons and their spouses: Tim (Sharon) Spader, Albuquerque, N.M.; Dennis (Jane) Spader, Norfolk, and their daughters, Amanda and Andrea (Andrew), Lincoln; Major Arthur Bermel Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.; one great-grandson, Owen; brother, Francis Bermel, California; sister, Darlene (Walt) Sunderman, Norfolk; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charline Bermel; parents, Frank and Gertrude Bermel; siblings, Donald Bermel, Gerard Bermel, Vincent Bermel, Richard Bermel and Joan Kenny.
