MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Brother Mark Gubbels, FSC, died June 19, 2025, at the age of 94. His funeral was July 2 in Memphis, Tenn. Given the name LaVem at birth, he was bom Jan. 10,1931, in Randolph, to Matthias and Sophia Gubbels. He attended Saint Francis Catholic School, Randolph. He enlisted in the army in 1952, and was stationed in Korea. After his discharge in 1954, he entered the De La Salle Christian Brothers in Missouri. As a student at St. Maiys College, Winona, Minn., Brother Mark earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education. Brother Mark taught in Kansas City, Mo.; St Louis Park, Minn.; St Joseph, Mo.; and Memphis, Tenn. He was an administrator at Rummel (Roncalli) High School, Omaha; St Louis, Mo.; and Cincinnati, Ohio. For many years he served in the business office at Christian Brothers University. Following his retirement in 1999, Brother Mark was a volunteer at Holy Names and De La Salle, Memphis. He was a teacher volunteer with the Memphis Literary Council and from 1999 to the winter of 2025, Brother Mark was a volunteer in the office at the Church Health Center.
Br. Mark is survived by a brother, Melvin Gubbels, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by Ms parents and Ms siblings, Sr. Magdalita Gubbels, OSF, Isidore Gubbels, Lexi OtterpoM, Michael Gubbels and Thomas Gubbels.
