HARTINGTON — June L. Mittan, 101, Hartington, died May 16, 2025, at the Arbor Care Center, Hartington.
Memorial Services were June 30 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington, ______________________________ Burial of her cremated remains was at the Hartington City Cemetery. The family received friends and relatives one hour prior to services.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.
June LaRene Mittan was born Nov. 2, 1923, in Cedar County, to Clarence and Fern (Parsons) Dowling. She attended Breezy Hill School, District 106 through the eighth grade and graduated from Hartington High School in 1940. She attended one year at Wayne State Teachers College and taught rural school for several years. She and Gaylon Mittan were married Dec 25, 1946, at the First Congregational Church, Hartington. They farmed in the Center School area until 1990, when they retired and moved to Hartington.
When on the farm, June had been a member of the Help Your Neighbor Club and the Chat and Sew Club.
In Hartington, she was an active member of the Congregational Church, a member of the Women’s Fellowship, served on the Distress Committee for many years and was the Church Historian for 19 years. She was a member of the Senior Center and volunteered at the Center for a number of years.
June was fond of making quilts, using scraps to make something useful.
___________________________________ was an active letter writer, especially keeping touch with the four grandchildren. June started doing genealogy research in 1976 Many summer trips found Gaylon and June wandering through old cemeteries in faraway states and visiting historical museums to gather information that she compiled into numerous notebooks tracing the families of her and Gaylon’s ancestors.
June is survived by two daughters and two sons, Carol Doeden, Blair; Marcia (Bruce) Newton, Omaha; Allen (Jennie) Mittan, Omaha; and Bob Mittan, Tucson, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Eric (Brie) Mittan, New York, N.Y.; Kaitlyn Mittan, Raleigh, N.C.; Brian (Val) Newton, Omaha; Kyle Mittan, Tucson, Ariz.; three step grandchildren, Bill Doeden, Omaha; Mike Doeden, Denver, N.C.; and Patricia Angle, Tucson, Ariz.; four great-grandchildren, Gavin, Liam and Ada June Newton, and Astoria June _______________________________________________________ Aaron, Sarah, Jacob and Joshua Doeden.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gaylon, in 2018; parents, in 1967; a brother, Ronald, in 1938; two sisters, Marjorie Konken, in 1985, and Barbara Kinkaid, in 2006; a son-in-law, Gil Doeden, in 2024; and an infant granddaughter.
