1945: Young Wiebelhaus boy dies in horse riding accident
FORDYCE — Donald Joseph Wiebelhaus, 9-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Wiebelhaus of Fordyce, was dragged to death by a horse on his farm Saturday.
The boy’s body was badly mangled and his skull was fractured. Numerous bones were broken.
No one witnessed the accident, but it was believed the horse he was riding became frightened and threw the boy. His foot apparently caught in the harness on the horse and he was dragged and kicked to death.
Donald, who was born on a farm north of Fordyce July 14, 1935, is survived by his parents; five brothers, Pvt. Elmer Wiebelhaus of Fort Meade, Md., Floyd, who left last Wednesday for induction into the service at Fort Leavenworth, Kans., and Marvin, Norman and Eugene at home; and three sisters, Sylvia, Florence and Geraldine, all at home. An older brother, Richard, was killed in an auto accident Feb. 24, 1943.
Funeral services for the youth were held Monday morning at Bow Valley. Rev. Anthony Kluthe officiated and burial was in the church cemetery under the direction of Reiferts. Pallbearers, all cousins, were Robert, James, Charles, Donovan and Dennis Wiebelhaus, all of Fordyce, and Norman Schurman of St. Helena.
