A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was June 23 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Thi Pham officiating. Lunch and fellowship followed the Mass and burial was at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Hartington. The family received friends and said a rosary one hour prior to the service.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Yankton.
Sherill Ann Collier was born July 22, 1936, in Fordyce, to Cyril “Chic” and Isabel (Willenbring) Becker. She attended school in Fordyce, Constance and then Hartington, graduating from Hartington High School in 1954. Sherrill then worked at Hegerts Hardware Store, Hartington, until 1957, when she married Alfred Steffen. They moved to Ottumwa, Iowa, where Sherill worked for Sears Robuck until they closed. She then worked for Holiday Inn for 21 years eventually becoming the general manager. In 1972, Sherrill married Delmer Collier in Ottumwa. They were married for six years. In 1991, she moved back to Hartington and later to Yankton in 1995. Sherrill worked at Gurney’s Seed and Nursery until they closed in 2000.
Sherrill enjoyed spending her time volunteering at many places, including Sacred Heart Hospital. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and enjoyed leading the rosary at Mass and at vigil services. Sherrill loved to read, play bingo and cards, and belonged to a canasta card club.
Sherrill is survived by three sisters, Maureen Clark, Minneapolis, Minn.; Laurie (Darrell) Kathol, Hartington; and Kathy (Larry) Lauer, Hartington; brother-in-law, David Mischke, Worland, Wyo.; and many nieces and nephews.
Sherrill was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Susan Mischke; four brothers and sisters in infancy, Shirley, Arlyce, Norman and Thomas; and a brother-in-law, Herbert Clark.
